PEMF Buying Guide

PEMF therapy is a type of treatment that has undergone numerous studies.

As a result, there is plenty of information online about various devices and different approaches to this type of therapy.

It is, without a doubt, a good idea to buy one of these devices for yourself and your family, and experience the benefits that it brings.

However, once you have chosen to do so, where do you begin?

How do you choose the right PEMF device when there are so many different types on the market and when every manufacturer is claiming that theirs is the best?

The point is that there isn’t such a thing as the best PEMF device.

There are only those that are more or less suitable for you and your condition.

Unfortunately, a PEMF device that is suitable for all people has not yet been invented, and therefore you need to know what you are looking for in one of these products, or else you might be disappointed.

The beauty of PEMF devices is that we keep learning new things about them.

So far, we know that they can have a plethora of effects on our body, including chemical, mechanical, magnetic, and electrical.

Moreover, there are numerous health conditions in which they can have a positive effect, as well.

We can use a different frequency, intensity, waveform, program, and so on, so there is not one right setting.

Therefore, before deciding to spend your money on a PEMF device, you should ask yourself some questions first, and your salesman second.

Personal information such as your health history, budget, lifestyle, and pathologies should be the determining factors during your process of purchase.

Let’s go through some of the most important aspects of PEMF devices, and pieces of advice that you should keep in mind so that you may make a better choice.

Research the Source

The fact that there are so many different PEMF devices out there from which you can choose also means that there are at least as many manufacturers, retailers, and resellers.

Of course, some of them offer better conditions and are more reliable than others.

But how do you go about choosing a good one?

You need to ask certain questions and get reliable answers before you opt for one.

First of all, how much experience does the company have that you are looking into?

Are they a reseller? If so, who are they partnered with?

Is the relationship they have with the manufacturer or importer a solid one and are they a reliable company?

Furthermore, you should check whether they have medical training or professional clinical training.

This is not necessary, but it will help if you ever need some medical assistance or advice regarding your PEMF device.

At least make sure that they consult with someone who does have medical expertise regarding PEMF therapy.

These are only some of the important questions you should think about.

You can consider other factors, as well.

For instance, ask around for a personal experience that someone that you know has had with a certain manufacturer or reseller.

It is not advisable for this to be a determining factor, but it could be a good starting point if you do not know where to begin.

Buying from a reseller is not a bad thing at all.

Often they will give you good conditions, but you need to make sure that they have plenty of experience and that they are going to be able to offer you reliable support in the future.

If they can provide you with PEMF support, that is great; if they can give you medical support as well, that is even better.

This is important because most contracts will require that you stay with your dealer for the rest of the warranty period.

Therefore, they will be your go-to solution if you ever experience any issues regarding your PEMF device.

You should also ask how professional and accessible the customer service of your dealer is.

Another feature you should consider is whether your dealer offers a money-back guarantee and a long warranty period.

These are some indications that you are dealing with a reputable product you can trust.

Don’t Believe Everything You Hear

As mentioned before, there is no PEMF device that we can call the best.

Therefore, if someone tells you that their device is the best for you, you should take this statement with a grain of salt.

If the best device for you is determined according to your health conditions, and they do not know what yours are, how would they know if the device meets your needs or not?

As we will see a little bit later in this article, PEMF devices differ in terms of frequency, intensity, waveform, and so on.

At the same time, different people, parts of the body, and pathologies respond better to certain settings and worse to others.

That is why you need to make sure that the product you are looking into supports the settings that you and your health conditions require.

For that reason, there is the best unit for you, but not the best unit in general.

When you’re buying a PEMF unit, you need to consult someone who has the necessary training and experience to determine in which direction you should go.

If they only have experience with one device and they are trying to convince you that it is the one-type-fits-all, you should probably consider other options.

Moreover, product comparisons are not reliable sources of information, either.

Many of these comparisons are compensated, and it is already determined which device will be placed ahead of the other ones.

Why Frequency Is Important

PEMF devices work by utilizing electromagnetic waves, and these waves operate at different frequencies that we measure in Hertz (Hz).

Different health conditions, people, body parts, and organs all respond to a frequency in a different way.

That is why there isn’t the perfect frequency. All frequencies are beneficial, both low and high.

You will hear that some manufacturers advertise their products by mentioning that their frequencies are in sync with the Earth’s.

This means that they operate at frequencies between 1-32 Hz.

These frequencies are, indeed, very beneficial for the human body.

However, this is not the whole range that we require.

Some pathologies need much higher frequencies to show any improvement.

Generally speaking, chronic diseases usually respond best to very high frequencies, because their cause is rooted deeper.

On the other hand, acute diseases require frequencies that are lower.

Therefore, the ideal PEMF device for you is the one that supports the frequencies that will address your health conditions or one that offers a wide range of frequencies.

So, when you are choosing the right retailer, they should be knowledgeable in this matter.

They should be able to inform you of the differences between frequencies and advise you in which direction to go.

Why Intensity Is Important

Similar to what we learned about frequencies, the same rule applies to intensities, as well.

The intensity means the strength of the electromagnetic waves that the PEMF device produces.

Each person and pathology respond to these intensities in a different way.

Moreover, almost all PEMF devices operate at very low intensities.

Therefore, you should not worry about any intensity being too strong for you and causing harm.

The intensity of electromagnetic waves is measured in Gauss.

For example, an MRI machine can produce as much as 10,000 – 30,000 Gauss.

At the same time, some of the strongest PEMF devices produce only around 2000 Gauss.

Some PEMF devices do not even produce 1 Gauss; however, they are still useful to treat certain conditions and can be very beneficial.

Therefore, when buying a PEMF device, it is important that you do not believe if someone tells you that a unit has a perfect intensity.

The deeper the problem is rooted in your body, the higher intensity you will need to “break” it.

Even though very low intensities are perfectly able to penetrate your body fully, they may need more time to provide evident results.

The charge they create in the body is smaller, so they are more suitable for some health conditions that are not severe or chronic.

Waveforms and PEMF Devices

Essentially the same principle that we applied to frequencies and intensities applies to waveforms, as well.

There are no perfect ones.

Furthermore, compared to frequencies and intensities, waveforms are not even that important in PEMF therapy.

However, many companies advertise their products according to this feature, so it is important to clarify it.

Much like frequency and intensity, all waveforms are beneficial.

Numerous studies have been done on different types of waveforms, and all of them have provided some results.

However, so far, there hasn’t been any research that has compared different waveforms, so we do not know how they stack up against each other.

There are many different types of waveforms, such as square, sinusoidal, trapezoidal, sawtooth, and so on.

Companies generally base their product advertisement on using one of these.

In the past 30 years, numerous studies have been done on waveforms, but to this day choosing the right one is more a personal preference than a scientific approach.

The bottom line is that waveforms should not be of big concern to you when you choose your perfect PEMF device.

You should focus on the right frequency and intensity, instead.

Therapy Programs

Therapy programs are also a consideration that you should look into when buying a PEMF device.

Most devices differ significantly with regard to the number of programs they have on offer.

Some have only one; others have multiple.

One notable program that many devices have is the biorhythm clock.

Studies show that at night, before bedtime, lower frequencies are beneficial to prepare us for sleep.

In the morning, higher frequencies are better to wake us up and prepare us for our day.

However, this is not always true and applicable.

Some health conditions require higher intensities for treatment, while others require lower.

Therefore, we might use the night program in the morning, and vice versa, to target a certain problem that we have.

Moreover, some programs are based on conditions that we want to induce, like relaxation, circulation, vitality, and so on.

We can use these to stimulate our brain and put it into the working state that we prefer at the time, regardless of what time of the day it is.

So, do not be too concerned with how many programs the device you are looking to buy offers.

They are not too important, as the frequencies that you will use are flexible, so being able to create a custom program will be good enough.

PEMF Device Accessories

Many PEMF devices come with certain accessories.

These can be very helpful to you, or completely unnecessary, depending on what health issue you want to treat.

Some of these accessories include sound- and light-producing machines, which can be helpful if you wish to use your PEMF device for meditation or relaxation.

Another such accessory is the so-called pen applicator, which is used to direct electromagnetic waves to one specific place on your body.

And some units offer the option for the database of protocols.

Most manufacturers who offer this feature have little evidence to prove that they are beneficial.

Therefore, it is important that you do not choose your PEMF device according to the accessories that come with it.

Additionally, do more research into what kind of accessories would be potentially beneficial for your condition and only, in that case, choose a machine that offers them.

PEMF and Polarity

Many dealers and manufacturers emphasize polarity when they advertise their products, but polarity has little to do with how PEMF devices work.

Polarity refers to the two poles that the Earth has – the North and the South.

However, changing the polarity on a PEMF device only means that the electromagnetic waves will travel in the opposite direction.

But this has a very little effect on the health benefits of PEMF therapy.

This has to do with the fact that, contrary to electricity, the magnetic field does not have a charge.

So, by changing the polarity you will not be able to increase the charge of one pole or the other.

You will just change the direction in which the waves travel.

There are no studies currently that prove that one pole is better than the other, or that one pole has a different effect than the other.

So, do not make this a determining factor when you buy a PEMF device.

FDA Registration and Approval

It is important to know that the FDA can register and also approve an item.

These are not the same.

When the FDA registers an item, it means that it knows that the item is imported into the USA.

When the FDA approves a PEMF device, it means that it acknowledges that this item has some positive health benefits.

However, neither of the two is a guarantee that a PEMF device is valuable or safe.

The FDA often approves a drug and then withdraws its approval due to safety concerns.

Moreover, some PEMF manufacturers do not want to be FDA approved, due to the high expense that such a tag requires.

Therefore, a PEMF device can be of very high value, but without an FDA approval tag.

So, do more research into the device, apart from the FDA stamp.

PEMF Rental

Some high-end PEMF devices offer a rental program in which you can try the device before you decide whether you want to buy it.

However, make sure that you get enough time to try it and make a proper decision.

Low-intensity machines need more time to show effects, so if you are looking into buying one of those, check if the rental period is long enough.

Value for Your Money

PEMF devices can differ substantially in price.

Some cost as little as $350, while others cost as much as $6000.

However, they have a great value for money ratio.

When you buy a PEMF device, you can use it for years and years.

Moreover, each family member can use it; pets and plants can, as well.

Therefore, you won’t have to buy another or upgrade your device after some time.

All you need to do is make sure that you buy a PEMF unit that offers high-quality construction and service.

In this case, multiple family members can benefit from it regularly for a long time.

PEMF Health Benefits

In general, PEMF devices provide multiple health benefits.

They can treat both healthy and sick people, and alleviate many symptoms and pathologies.

Here is a list of some of the most notable health conditions treatable with PEMF therapy, supported by reputable studies.

  • Bone Healing

Scientists in Bangladesh proved in 1999 that PEMF can significantly improve bone healing.

More research is being done to clarify the mechanism by which this happens, but the correlation between the two is clear (1).

  • Diabetes

A study in 2013 showed that PEMF has many benefits for diabetic polyneuropathy.

One hundred twenty-one patients reported improvements in their conditions at the end of the research.

Both the peripheral and spinal nerves improved their function after continuous application of PEMF therapy (2).

  • Depression

In early 2000, it was proven that PEMF therapy can improve the condition of patients suffering from depression and anxiety.

The rats in the study showed improvements in both emotional stability and physical activity.

The most beneficial frequency was proven to occur at an application of between 4-6 Hz (3).

  • Blood Flow

In 2004, the link between improved blood flow and PEMF was established.

The study showed that regular PEMF therapy causes vasodilatation of arteriolar microvessels.

This can improve the condition of patients suffering from clogged arteries, heart conditions, and high blood pressure (4).

  • Migraines

Forty-two patients took part in a study in 1999 that tried to prove PEMF therapy can resolve migraine symptoms.

After two months of regular therapy, all 42 patients showed significant improvements.

Either their migraines decreased in a number of occurrences, or in intensity.

It was found that 20 days of continuous therapy is necessary before symptoms of migraines start to disappear (5).

  • Range of Motion

A study in 1996 showed that PEMF therapy can improve patients’ range of motion.

The patients who participated in the study suffered from neck pain, muscle spasms, back pain, low range of motion, and other issues.

All of them reported improvements in most of their related symptoms (6).

  • Cell Regeneration

In 1986 study was done to try to determine whether PEMF therapy could improve cell regeneration.

Specifically, the subject of the research was how PEMF would affect wound healing.

After the completion of the study, it was found that electromagnetic waves do cause an improvement in wound healing and cell regeneration processes (7).

  • Arthritis

It has been well-known for years that PEMF therapy can help greatly with symptoms of arthritis.

Indian researchers set out to prove this by doing a study in which they tried to find a correlation between the two.

They found that patients who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis benefit greatly from PEMF therapy (8).

  • Pain

In 1999 a study was conducted to show that PEMF therapy can have a positive effect on pain relief.

Patients experiencing lower pelvic pain were included in the study, and all of them showed signs of improvement by the end (9).

  • Nerve Repair

Rats suffering from induced sciatica problems were included in a study in 1993.

The results of the study were quite positive, showing that PEMF therapy can stimulate nerve regeneration.

All rats included in the study improved in health, and a reduction of the symptoms that this health problem caused was observed (10).
